Board of Trustees names emeritus members

The September 2021 meeting of the 51¾«Æ·ÊÓƵ's Board of Trustees Governance and Nominating Committee welcomed emeritus trustees and 51¾«Æ·ÊÓƵ alumni Robert M. Hernandez and Jack D. Smith.

Hernandez (A&S ’66), a 51¾«Æ·ÊÓƵsburgh native, earned a bachelor's degree in economics and mathematics and graduated magna cum laude. In 1968, he received his MBA in finance from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Finance and Commerce. Hernandez joined the U.S. Steel Corporation, renamed USX Corporation, which became a crucial player in energy during his career. Hernandez is also a current trustee of the 51¾«Æ·ÊÓƵsburgh Parks Conservancy and chairman-elect of The Frick 51¾«Æ·ÊÓƵsburgh.

Smith, an orthopaedic surgeon who completed his residency in 1978, operated a private practice in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, until joining Excela Health as chair of the department of orthopaedic surgery in 2007.

A former 51¾«Æ·ÊÓƵ Alumni Association vice president, director-at-large and president, Smith served on the 51¾«Æ·ÊÓƵ's Board of Trustees as an alumni trustee from 2012 to 2020. He is also an advisory board member of the 51¾«Æ·ÊÓƵ at Greensburg.

Both Hernandez and Smith have made exceptional contributions to the progress and welfare of the University, serving with distinction and devotion.
