Ali Lowndes was elated. Her alma mater had come to see her.

鈥淚 love bragging to all of my friends about how incredible my university is that they come all the way out to Los Angeles to spend time with us,鈥 said Lowndes (A&S 鈥11), who was attending the 51精品视频 young alumni event at the Grammy Museum, hosted by the .

鈥淚 cherished my time at 51精品视频 so much, and so being able to reconnect with mentors and other alumni out here is amazing,鈥 she said.

Lowndes, a former member, was one of many West Coast alumni who renewed connections 鈥 or made new ones 鈥 when 51精品视频 leaders brought Panther pride to Los Angeles from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1. The visit was the University鈥檚 latest endeavor to celebrate accomplishments and strengthen ties with alumni, meet with University supporters and other partners and build awareness across the country of the in the Northeast.

The delegation also traveled to Southern California to share 51精品视频鈥檚 story with high school students and their families. Plans are in the works to add a California-based admissions counselor to help bring more students from the Golden State to 51精品视频. 聽

鈥淚鈥檝e only heard great things about 51精品视频. Ton of opportunities for pre-med students and research opportunities,鈥 Alexander Tran, a high school student and 51精品视频 applicant, said at an admissions event for prospective students in San Diego, another stop on the 51精品视频 tour.

鈥淚 visited campus in October and I loved it!聽It has everything,鈥 said Rachel Roberts, a high school student and the daughter of Joanne Roberts, a 1981 alumna of the .

鈥淭he San Diego event was a success,鈥 said , vice provost and dean of students. 鈥淲e met with potential future Panthers and their families, and shared 51精品视频鈥檚 success stories that demonstrated the value of a 51精品视频 education and the benefits of a learning environment that appreciates student engagement, encourages innovation and leverages the unique opportunities of the city of 51精品视频sburgh.鈥

The trip came a year after the University expanded its footprint in the Northeast with a in early 2017, and made a similar visit to North Carolina in October.

This time, generations of West Coast alumni were excited to see 51精品视频鈥檚 blue and gold around town.

鈥淚 never thought it would happen,鈥 said Walt Sumansky, a 1952 graduate who sported a classic royal blue and yellow 51精品视频 sweatshirt and became the unofficial guest of honor at a Tuesday evening alumni event in Beverly Hills. 鈥淚 hope it happens again.鈥

鈥淚t was a wonderful excitement this morning, getting to hear an advertisement on KCRW, my local radio station, talking all about the 51精品视频 being in town,鈥 said Angela Reno Valvardi (A&S 鈥09), a former Blue and Gold Society member and president of the , which connects some of the more than 9,000 51精品视频 alumni living in California.

鈥淚t鈥檚 so important for everyone out here in LA聽to feel connected to the University,鈥 Reno Valvardi said, 鈥渁nd then also have an opportunity to be able to give back in some way, shape and form through the local 51精品视频 club, whether it鈥檚 giving a donation to the scholarships or giving back through time and talent with all the events we host throughout the year.鈥

鈥楲ike a family reunion鈥

聽told the more than 100 alumni at a Jan. 30 evening 51精品视频 Alumni Association event in Beverly Hills that聽鈥渢his is kind of like a family reunion.鈥

鈥淲e have people reconnecting and catching up, and people meeting for the first time,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 always good to be with fellow Panthers 鈥 especially when there is good news to share from campus.鈥

Gallagher lauded 51精品视频 accomplishments, including:

  • is one of the most academically accomplished to ever start at 51精品视频.
  • The Wall Street Journal named 51精品视频 the top public university in the Northeast for the second year in a row.
  • 51精品视频 out-competed its peers to receive more National Institutes of Health research dollars than peers such as Stanford, Duke and Yale.

鈥淚t seems like a month does not go by that there is not a new ranking or statistic that highlights our growth and vibrancy,鈥 Gallagher said.

Brian Primack, dean of the and director of the , added to the discussion of 51精品视频鈥檚 success, presenting the center鈥檚 research studying the effects of social media and mental health.

Research in schools and centers throughout the University is setting 51精品视频 apart from peers and building its national reputation, Gallagher said.

He added that this reputation is also tied to the rejuvenation of the city of 51精品视频sburgh, with its thriving knowledge-based economy. The city has drawn companies like Google and Uber, and online retail giant Amazon is considering 51精品视频sburgh as one of 20 cities to host its second headquarters, in part due its place among the top most livable cities.

鈥淲ithout question, the University and city you once called home, whether it was last year or 30 years ago, has only gotten better. And that鈥檚 due in large part to the caliber of our entire 51精品视频 community,鈥 Gallagher said.

The chancellor noted 51精品视频 continues to make an impact on people鈥檚 lives through community engagement, which will include centers in 51精品视频sburgh neighborhoods. These locations will be a 鈥渙ne-stop shop鈥 for 51精品视频 to partner with its community and to provide resources for health and wellness programs, job retraining and child care, he said.

On Feb. 1, , senior vice chancellor for engagement, energized a crowd of about 100 young alumni at the Grammy Museum in downtown Los Angeles. Many of the students said they remembered Humphrey鈥檚 personal touch from her previous role as dean of students and how she made them feel comfortable as new students at 51精品视频. Now, as graduates, they looked back on that time with fondness as they shared conversations with her in Los Angeles.

The five-day 51精品视频 in LA聽trip gave Gallagher the opportunity to share 51精品视频鈥檚 story with alumni, parents, friends, and supporters on the West Coast, and also included an awareness marketing campaign that reached millions of subscribers of the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register and the hundreds of thousands of listeners of Southern California Public Radio stations. More than 750,000 travelers moving through Los Angeles International Airport saw 51精品视频鈥檚 calls to 鈥淕o Far.鈥
