Newest Panthers Forward Class Prepares to Give Back

Panthers Forward, a program that leverages the power of the 51精品视频 community to reduce student debt and support success, recently celebrated its听听with games, networking and a听.

鈥淲e love our community and we鈥檙e thrilled to be able to host an end-of-year send-off with great speakers, trivia and prizes that didn鈥檛 feel like just another Zoom meeting,鈥 said Sarah Webb, director of Panthers Forward. 鈥淛ust because we can鈥檛 celebrate in person doesn鈥檛 mean we can鈥檛 have a good time.鈥

听harnesses the philanthropic power of the 51精品视频 community to reduce student loan debt. Launched in 2018, the program accepts 150 seniors each year who have taken out federal loans to cover their schooling and offers them up to $5,000 to offset their student loan debt. The program asks the Panthers to return the favor and donate back to the program when they鈥檙e able. It also includes networking, educational opportunities and tips for financial literacy as participants exit college. This financial education is an important resource.听

鈥淎s someone who understands the burden of student debt, I鈥檓 excited to be working for a program with the goal of combating the student loan crisis in this country,鈥 said Webb. 鈥淚t鈥檚 personal for me and I want to give our students access to resources I didn鈥檛 have, like our programming on financial literacy and student loan basics. Our hope is that our program helps seniors feel more prepared as they transition to life after graduation.鈥

During this year鈥檚 April celebration, the 51精品视频sburgh Foundation gave an in-depth presentation about the ways that students can give back not only to 51精品视频 but to the 51精品视频sburgh community.听

鈥淕iving is more than just powerful鈥攊t can enrich your life,鈥 said Emmie Calland, director of the 51精品视频sburgh Foundation. Calland asked students to reflect on their own giving:听what organizations they donated their money and time to, and why.听

One student, Corrine Chernich, talked about how her interest in the nursing field inspired her to participate in听, a year-long program raising funds and awareness for the UPMC Children鈥檚 Hospital of 51精品视频sburgh.听

鈥淚 feel like it all relates. I want to be a nurse, so giving my time to a children鈥檚 hospital just makes sense,鈥 she said.听听

Another student, communications major Rachel Stackiewicz, summarized what others offered in one phrase: 鈥淕iving back to things that gave to you.鈥澨

After the presentation, the students got to engage in fun and activities hosted by alumnus Eric Burnett鈥檚 (A&S 鈥07) Fireside Events. Students participated in trivia and other games to win prizes鈥攁 nice break indeed from the usual Zoom calls.听
