People Look to Their Neighbors on Climate Change Opinions, Study Finds

Andrea La Nauze
Climate change caused by humans is widely considered a contributing factor to the ongoing bushfires devastating Australia. However, scientists and politicians often face skepticism when it comes to taking steps to combat global warming.

But would people believe it when they see that their next-door neighbors do?

That鈥檚 the question economics researchers at the 51精品视频 recently sought to answer. The team聽聽in the journal Environmental and Resource Economics detailing what happens to climate change bias when people witness their neighbors putting solar panels on their roofs.

鈥淎ny new laws or advancements in technologies and movements to curb climate change require substantial political and public support. Public perception is crucially important since the public is far more skeptical about climate change than the scientific community,鈥 said co-author聽, assistant professor in 51精品视频鈥檚聽.听

The study, which analyzed five years of survey data collected between 2010 and 2014 in Australian communities, showed that for every additional 1,000 solar panels in a neighborhood, the share of neighbors that believe climate change is primarily caused by human action increased by seven percentage points.听

鈥淭hey see their neighbors install solar panels, so they get interested and read more on them and climate change to update their beliefs. Maybe they receive government funding to install panels, or maybe they just believe their neighbors more than scientists. There鈥檚 all kinds of possibilities as to why,鈥 said聽Graham聽Beattie, assistant professor of economics at Loyola Marymount University, who worked on the study as a post-doctoral researcher at 51精品视频 until 2018.

As a follow up to this research, La Nauze is writing a working paper explaining the spillover effects from solar panels to other people鈥檚 actions regarding climate change.听

On the flip side, the research team also found that the addition of 1,000 solar panels caused concern about the effects of climate change to fall by six percentage points.

鈥淭hey believe something聽large enough聽is being done to tackle this problem,鈥 said La Nauze. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not able to say what the mechanism behind that is, but it is something we鈥檙e trying to understand more.鈥

While a golden rule in science is that correlation doesn鈥檛 mean causation, the 51精品视频 team聽argues that the study鈥檚 model determines a causal relationship.

鈥淥ne thing we鈥檙e able to do with a technique called instrumental variables is argue that this relationship is causal; if you install solar panels in a neighborhood, it has a direct effect on people鈥檚 beliefs. This is new in literature,鈥 La Nauze said. 鈥淭he economic return to solar panels shouldn鈥檛 have a direct effect on people鈥檚 belief in climate change, but it does have a direct effect on solar panel uptake.鈥

La Nauze studies environmental and energy economics. With the U.S. government funding about 聽between 1993 and 2018 to study climate change, La Nauze says it鈥檚 important for the general public to be informed about these study results.

According to a 2019 , while 59% of Americans believe that global climate change is a 鈥渕ajor threat,鈥 41% say it鈥檚 a 鈥渕inor threat鈥 or not a threat at all.

鈥淚t is in our economic interests to be undertaking mitigation. We have science that tells us this is a problem, and we have economic models that tell us climate change is also an economic problem,鈥 La Nauze said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e trying to figure out the optimal allocation of resources. Our Earth鈥檚 atmosphere is a resource and it can be argued right now that we鈥檙e not allocating that resource optimally.鈥

鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot more solar installation in Australia than there is in the U.S., but conjecturally speaking, there鈥檚 no reason why this relationship wouldn鈥檛 also exist in the U.S.,鈥 Beattie added.

The study was funded in part by a seed grant from 51精品视频鈥檚聽.
