Gwen Sowa was elected to the National Academy of Medicine

, UPMC Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Professor and chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in the School of Medicine, was recently elected to the聽 (NAM), considered one of the highest honors in health care and medicine.

Sowa is also co-director of the at 51精品视频 and holds joint appointments in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Department of Bioengineering in the Swanson School of Engineering. Her research focuses on the mechanobiology of the intervertebral disc and molecular biomarkers of low back pain.

NAM addresses critical issues in health, science, medicine and related policy and inspires positive actions across sectors. The organization also works alongside the聽National Academy of Sciences聽and聽National Academy of Engineering聽to provide independent, objective analysis and advice to the nation and conducts other activities to solve complex problems and inform public policy decisions.
