Delivering More Than Just Groceries

The back of the car looks like the medical students just bought out a farmer鈥檚 market. Several boxes rest there, filled with fresh produce鈥攇reen cucumbers, yellow squash, red apples. Each carton is on its way to somebody鈥檚 home. They are almost too heavy to lift, but the students can manage one at a time. 鈥淚t requires some muscle,鈥 says , associate professor of medicine and director of the and at the 51精品视频 .

Partnering with the Greater 51精品视频sburgh Community Food Bank program, once a month, Bui and her med student team deliver the likes of broccoli, Brussels sprouts聽and basic medical attention to patients in their homes. Their clients are referred through Alma Illery Medical Center in Homewood and ; people can also apply through the .

Casey Tompkins-Rhoades, a third-year medical student, said the program seeks out people 鈥渨ho sometimes get overlooked by the healthcare system.鈥澛

She and her classmates wanted to help break down barriers to good health that some 51精品视频sburghers face鈥攍ike limited mobility or financial issues.

Lola Adebiyi (Class of 鈥21), lead student coordinator, described聽how, after bringing the produce into a home, the team would begin聽with a quick check of the patient鈥檚 heart, lungs聽and blood pressure. Then, the team addresses other topics appropriate to that patient.

If a patient has diabetes, for instance, the team might discuss sugar levels and help to set up the patient鈥檚 next clinic visit with Bui, noted聽Adebiyi. The team might also check on a patient鈥檚 medications and take note of refills.听

At the end of each appointment, the students make a point of asking patients about 鈥渨hatever else is on their mind,鈥 said聽Adebiyi, and this is where real connection happens. Adebiyi聽said聽that she notices 鈥渉ow appreciative people are of seeing people of color in medicine. It鈥檚 something I always take home with me and keep in my heart.鈥澛

Something else she heard often: requests for return visits, with more fresh and colorful produce, of course.听
