When Maxwell Reiver聽arrived as a first-year student at the 51精品视频 in 2016, he had high expectations for the how the University supported its Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) students.

鈥淭his had been the most important factor in determining whether or not a school would be right for me,鈥 said Reiver, a Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, native who is pursuing degrees in聽Japanese聽and聽English literature聽in the聽Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, with a certificate in聽Asian Studies聽from the聽University Center for International Studies. 鈥淎s a gender-nonconforming trans person, I was especially concerned with how I could have a positive college experience while safely navigating living away from my parents in a new city.鈥澛

Reiver聽said, from the start, he was accommodated with a single occupancy room and a private bathroom on a gender-neutral floor in a campus residence hall. At the time, 51精品视频 hadn鈥檛 yet developed its聽聽鈥 which is just one of the ways Reiver said that 51精品视频 has come far in the past few years in its support for LGBTQ+ students. And this week, 51精品视频 was honored by being named a Best College for LGBTQ+ students by Best Colleges in partnership with Campus Pride.

Reiver, who said he is 鈥渢hrilled鈥 51精品视频 has made progress in its support for LGBTQ+ students, said he found his community through a student organization called聽.

鈥淭hrough those same friends from Rainbow, I was introduced to a group of trans and nonbinary students who would casually get together over snacks before Rainbow meetings. This group went on to become T is For, an organization for trans, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming members of the 51精品视频 community,鈥 said Reiver, who serves as president of T is For. Reiver聽said even during the COVID-19 crisis, the group continues to have weekly聽meetings over Zoom to 鈥渇eel a little less apart during these strange times.鈥澛

Always in progress

Reiver said the expansion of gender-inclusive housing, implementation of the preferred name process, the creation of more gender-neutral bathrooms and the development of more LGBTQ+ student organizations have made a positive impact 鈥 but there鈥檚 room for growth.

Katie Pope, 51精品视频鈥檚聽associate vice chancellor for civil rights and Title IX, agrees.聽

鈥淭his June during Pride Month, I鈥檓 especially proud that 51精品视频 has been named a Best College for LGBTQ+ students, but there鈥檚 certainly more work to be done,鈥 said Pope. 鈥淎t 51精品视频, the work is always in progress to live up to our commitment of ensuring that all members of our LGBTQIA+ community feel safe, respected and valued.鈥

More about the ranking

The Best Colleges for LGBTQ+ Students ranking 鈥渞ecognizes聽U.S. schools that have established the highest standards for inclusive environments while maintaining strong academic programs for students.鈥 The ranking is also intended to help prospective students of various gender and sexual identities with their college search.聽聽

In the ranking, 51精品视频 received a five out of five stars, this is the fourth year that the University has been ranked on the index.

The rankings utilize Best Colleges鈥櫬犅爋f academic support and affordability data, combined along with the聽聽score, which measures the following:

  • Policy inclusion
  • Support and institutional commitment聽
  • Academic life聽
  • Student life
  • Housing and residence life聽
  • Campus safety聽
  • Counseling and health
  • Recruitment and retention

Led by Pope, 51精品视频鈥檚聽Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI)聽puts a strong emphasis on education and offers a spectrum of聽聽to support the needs of the LGBTQ+ community on campus. To better foster an understanding of LGBTQ+ issues and to create a more inclusive environment, ODI leads customized聽聽to groups across campus on a variety of topics. In the fall, ODI will resume its聽聽where all members of the University community are able to discuss their questions, concerns or ideas for improving the LGBTQ+ experience.聽聽

ODI is also a central resource to connect LGBTQ+ students to other safe spaces and support systems across campus, such as the聽University Counseling Center,聽Student Health Services聽and聽PRIDE Health.

A strong partner

Another strong partner of ODI, Pope said, is 51精品视频鈥檚聽Gender, Sexuality and Women鈥檚 Studies聽(GSWS) Program in the Dietrich School.聽

鈥淚n the GSWS Program, we鈥檝e worked hard to create a strong curriculum in LGBTQ studies and queer theory, and our new minor in聽LGBTQ and Critical Sexuality Studies聽(launched in spring 2019) is an important contribution to that curriculum,鈥 said Nancy Glazener, director of the GSWS Program.聽

Outside the classroom, students who are interested in LGBTQIA communities and sexuality studies have landed internships at organizations like聽the Girl Scouts, the Midwife Center, Planned Parenthood and the City Gender Equity Commission.

鈥淲hile we value the rigor associated with academic work, we also emphasize聽that our faculty and students are a community, and the events that we sponsor help foster close collaboration between faculty and students, and exposure to new scholarship that helps students think through their place in the world,鈥 said Frayda Cohen, the GSWS Program鈥檚 director of undergraduate studies.聽

Both Glazener and Cohen said Julie Beaulieu, lecturer in the GSWS Program, has done a great deal in making 51精品视频 an institution that received a good rating on the Campus Pride index, calling her an 鈥渋ncredible resource鈥 for the 51精品视频 community as a whole 鈥 leading many workshops and collaborating with ODI, student groups and 51精品视频 organizations such as the聽Transgender Working Group.

Another project in the works: Beaulieu, along with Robin Kear and David Grinnell of the聽University Library System, recently received an Innovation in Education grant in order to develop an online discovery tool for LGBTQ archives in the 51精品视频sburgh area. 51精品视频 students, through classes and internships, will be centrally involved in developing this tool and working in the archives it accesses. 聽

鈥淚n addition to building on and helping to document existing histories of LGBTQ 51精品视频sburgh, the 51精品视频 LGBTQ Archival Education Project will make a strong contribution to sustaining 51精品视频鈥檚 commitment to diversity, and it helps us to heal some wounds by telling untold stories,鈥 said Beaulieu. 鈥淲e鈥檙e particularly invested in collecting information about archival materials that uplift the voices of black and brown LGBTQ people in 51精品视频sburgh鈥檚 community.鈥

鈥淎s faculty in GSWS, I see nothing but enthusiasm for 51精品视频鈥檚 progress and I鈥檓 incredibly honored to do my part; it鈥檚 a way of saying thank you to those that gave me a chance,鈥 said Beaulieu. 鈥淲e should take pride in the fact that most of us at 51精品视频 are eager to get ahead of the curve simply because it鈥檚 objectively good to serve our LGBTQ students.鈥
